Short Film 6

「There is a beauty in your story.」

Three years ago I decided that I would like to become a professional photographer.

However,  I am still just an assistant to my master.

My master said to me, “Your pictures always lack a story. You can’t capture the most important moment.”

I thought “A story? What is it?”

I need to hurry up and become a professional because assistants usually can’t get a salary. I have to do a part-time job every night. I often create my work when I have even a short amount of time.

I thought that these matters seem mutually exclusive; time or money, work or love, and quality or quantity.

I asked my friend to be a model. She is Vietnamese.

She is a really cheerful person and she likes chatting. However, when I asked her to a model, she said to me, “I think I can’t smile.”

“Don’t worrry, I don’t care.” I said to her. I know she is not a proffesional model. Frankly speaking, I want to take happy photos, but I just have to grin and bear it.

We reached the park, and I started taking some pictures but it was all wrong. I couldn’t capture both her face and the Christmas lights.

When I wanted to take the Christmas lights, her face was dark. But when I took her face clearly, the Christmas lights changed to white. I thought I have to choose one of the two.

Mean while, she was being very quiet that day. Maybe she was nervous. I was trying to get rid of my own anxiety, I tried to get a laugh with a joke. She smiled a little.

I said, “Your smile is so cute!” but she said to me, “Sorry I can’t smile well.”

I had no choice and I said to her, “Don’t worry, you don’t need to smile. Take it easy!”

I just barely made the shooting, we took a little walk around the park.

At that time I noticed  the beauty of the scene for the first time.

I was also busy and nervous, I couldn’t see the scene spreading out in front of me.

“Shall we go home?” I said to her. She nodded silently.

We were waiting for the traffic light to change with our back to the Christmas lights.

The traffic light turned green, when I took the first step,

“Wait a moment.”

She said and looked back at the scene.

The wind ruffled her hair to face, and her profile was illuminated by blue light.

“Let me take this in.” She said and smiled at me.

I felt that I heard the words of my master. “This is your moment!!”

I felt faint.

At last, any photos are good, however, I can’t select the best.

It is because I made a copy of her smile in my heart.
